This painting originally started out as one single piece. However, while I was still making sketches to decide on the final lay-out, it came to me the painting would turn out better if it were two paintings instead.
The skullbird is a continuation of the bird theme, which started in Ioanna’s Bird, with a twist: the bird’s beak has been transformed into a horse-like skull… (you can see a baby skullbird in Tutor).
